Artist Statement

I use the technique of pyrography to create my imaginatively drawn images because I like the rich historical tradition and vintage aesthetics. Working with natural materials and using low-waste processes also appeal to me. I enjoy the simplicity and expressive encouragement of minimal studio requirements. Above all, I am enamoured with the atmospheric sepia- and umber-toned imagery that flows my burning pens genarate. Occasionally, I extend my palette by adding tints of hand-made, naturally derived watercolours.

My imagery reflects the psychic consequences of life experiences, exploring their impact on self-perception and the survival constructs we unconsciously erect in response. At first glance, my subjects exude a calm resignation to the progression of their destiny. Upon closer inspection, one sees hints of vulnerability and compensatory reserve, or perhaps a weathered resilience forged through navigating life's hurdles. They are equally burdened and decorated by the complex survival suits they wear.

My background in garment design has influenced my views on adornment as a reflection of our self-perceptions, history and aspirations. As an artist, I seek to examine the relationship between external appearance and the tones and tangles of the individual journeys that lie beneath.

Juxtaposing the complexity of my subjects' attire with their serene facial expressions creates an evocative visual contrast. It also suggests a degree of resolve. The gentle expression of peaceful optimism is indicative of progress in adapting to the terms of each unique costume of experience.

In many ways,  my pyrography imagery is aligned with a recurring theme in my art– the condition of imposture and the disquieting consequences of its embrace. Much of my earlier work had addressed the soul-etching side effects of a fractured identity. In these recent works, my focus has shifted to the progressive potential of exchanging artifice for authenticity, and seeking to bridge the gap between appearance and essence in a manner that celebrates the definition and details of our individuality.
